Fabric Guide

What is GSM and why does it matters?

Everything you need to know about fabric weight before ordering your next custom tee, corporate uniform, or premium streetwear piece in Malaysia.

The Basic

What does GSM mean?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre — the universal standard for measuring how heavy a fabric is per one square metre of material.

Think of it this way: if you cut out a 1m × 1m square of your t-shirt fabric and weighed it on a scale, that number in grams is the GSM. A 160 GSM tee means that square weighs 160 grams. Simple.

The higher the GSM, the heavier, thicker, and generally more durable the fabric. For buyers in Malaysia — whether you’re ordering custom t-shirts in KL, sourcing corporate uniform printing, or running a local streetwear brand — GSM is one of the most important specs to understand before you commit to a bulk order.

T-shirt GSM ranges explained

How GSM affects your t-shirt

Breathability

Lower GSM fabrics breathe better — crucial for outdoor events, warehouse teams, or factory uniforms in Malaysia's 32°C heat.

Durability

Heavier GSM resists pilling, stretching, and colour fade over multiple washes. Better value long-term for frequent wearers.

Print quality

Thicker fabrics hold screen print and DTF (direct-to-film) designs better. Less bleed-through, sharper edges, more vibrant colours.

Opacity

Tees below 150 GSM can be see-through, especially in white or light colours. Go 180 GSM+ if opacity matters for your brand.

Perceived value

Customers and recipients notice weight. A heavier tee signals quality. For merch and giveaways, it leaves a better brand impression.

Embroidery suitability

Embroidery needs structure to sit well. 200 GSM+ is recommended for logos and badges — lighter fabrics can pucker and distort.

Malaysia climate tip

Malaysia’s year-round heat and humidity means 150–190 GSM is the comfort sweet spot for outdoor and event use.

FAQ

Common questions about GSM

Is higher GSM always better for t-shirts in Malaysia?

Not necessarily. In Malaysia’s tropical climate, a 250 GSM tee can feel uncomfortably hot outdoors. Higher GSM is better for quality and durability — but match it to the environment your team will be wearing it in.

What GSM do most Malaysian t-shirt printers use?

Most local custom t-shirt printing suppliers in Malaysia stock blanks in the 160–200 GSM range. Premium suppliers may carry 220–260 GSM options for higher-end orders.

Does GSM affect the price of custom t-shirts?

Yes — heavier fabric costs more per unit. Expect a 10–30% price difference between a 160 GSM and a 220 GSM blank before printing costs are added.

Mass-market brands typically use 150–180 GSM for their everyday tees. Premium basics brands and local streetwear labels often push 200–250 GSM for a more substantial feel.
